A truly essential guide to have if you love food, as I do. I have visited Shanghai several times and mostly sought the help of trip advisor, but some of the most popular restaurants aren’t always the best. This guide is gives it’s reader much more too. Because it’s written by people with a true passion for food. They share lots of great tips, not only dining options, but nightlife, shopping and even accommodation hints. Can’t wait to return to Shanghai to use the guide again and eat more of those delicious tarts from Lillian’s. Thank you. (October 23, 2015)
Can’t say enough good things about the shanghai glutton guide. We bought the guide on a whim without knowing much about it but decided for the low price to give it a try. First of all the recommendations are incredible- we got to trying around 5 places (all were incredible) before we became so obsessed with one of the hotpot recommendations that we just kept going back to the same restaurant. TripAdvisor always steers you to the places of the tourists – and I was never happy with that. This book guides you through extremely local places where knowing mandarin is a must – BUT the guide tells you what to order – how to pronounce it and writes it in Chinese letters in case they can’t understand you. Each resturant has excellent abrievations for the location, price, category, and if its good for breakfast lunch and or dinner. Also it has the locations in Chinese which is useful for cabs. I have to say the guide is very very extensive, and extremely useful for all aspects of food (markets, mandarin, tea, everything). I have to say the glutton guide has really made our shanghai experience so unique and it’s really upsetting knowing that I can’t buy one of these guides in every single city of the world.
One thing to note is that actually you will save money by buying this guide – as most really local stuff is super cheap and definitely much cheaper than the tourist spots. (September 29, 2015)

We did the evening street food walking tour with Garth and everything was fantastic. We have lived in China for 3 years and Garth showed us dishes that we have never tried before. It was really a history and food tour. Garth was so knowledgeable about Beijing and food. He explained all about the Beijing Hutong’s and the origin’s of the foods we ate. Excellent food all evening. We had teenagers with us who were thoroughly engaged all evening as well. Garth was great about answering specific questions and providing information on where to eat, recipes and where to buy cooking equipment. Be ready to eat and walk. I recommend doing this walking tour early in your Beijing trip as you will be able to get good recommendations on where to eat the rest of your stay.
A great way to see the back streets of Beijing, and to eat REAL Chinese food. I suggest doing the tour at the beginning of your trip, then you’ll know where to find the real food, and won’t be afraid to try it!
What a great tour! I do a food tour in nearly every place I visit, and I can say that this was easily one of the best, if not THE best, that I’ve done. Kelly, our guide, did a great job in selecting the places to eat at – these are places, as a tourist, you never would have stumbled across. She provided a ton of insight into local life in the hutongs of Beijing and was extremely knowledgeable on every question that was asked.
Without exception, the food at every stop was amazing! Who would have thought that the best chicken wings I’ve had would be found in Beijing? And the donkey burger was so good!
This tour was worth twice the price. I couldn’t recommend it enough. The length of the tour was perfect and you will leave full! If you are in Beijing, you have to do this tour!
This tour unlocks doors and opens up adventures you’d otherwise never hear of. As a visitor this is the way to go if you want to experience local flavors. The guide is knowledgeable and friendly. I’ve done two tours with UnTour and I’m so glad I’ve done them. Can greatly recommend booking a tour with them, you won’t regret it!
We had a great time on this tour! Very easy to find the meeting spot, and our guide Garth was very knowledgable and friendly. The tour takes you to places that you’d never be able to find on your own, let alone know what to order. We really enjoyed the local knowledge plus broader history that Garth took us through that the dishes related to, and meeting other travellers too. Highly recommend not filling up before the last stop!
My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast walking tour around the hutongs with Garth and Jamie. They were so friendly and knowledgeable about the food, the city and Chinese history/culture/language, not to mention very flexible – even making special efforts to locate one person who had missed the start of the tour (without disrupting the tour for the rest of us). The food was all delicious, and eating your way around is a great way to get to know a new city. Although there was a lot of food, the tour was still well paced. It was a hot day, so we definitely appreciated the quiet coffee break on a terrace to get out of the sun and take a rest from gobbling down dumplings, jianbing, fried pastries and other yummy treats. Warning – pace yourself, as there’s no way you can possibly eat everything on offer!
This food tour was amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone. We originally planned to do the shanghai tour but this fell through and Jamie was really helpful in accommodating us so we could do it in Beijing. We did the tour a few hours before our flight home and it did not disappoint. By far the nicest food I had in China.
Our guide Kelly had an unbelievable knowledge of the city and took us to places you would never find on your own. She was the biz.
