As long-term Shanghai residents and foodies, we at UnTour Shanghai, love Lost Heaven‘s sleek ambience and Thai-Burmese-Laotian flavors. Yunnan cuisine is one of our favorite regional cuisines, with its interesting minority dishes, wild mushrooms and goat cheese from mountainous northern regions and tropical spices in the south. But Lost Heaven’s Yunnan Folk Cuisine menu is nearly 100 dishes long, and we’ve had several of our UnTour Shanghai food tour guests who made dinner reservations there complain they’ve had subpar meals there. This unfortunately happens a lot in China as menus are notoriously long, so we’ve included a list of our go-to orders. (We’ve also had several guests who didn’t like the dimly lit atmosphere and found it less than kid-friendly, so there are two things to keep in mind too. If you are looking for a more jovial, communal atmosphere for Yunnan cuisine, you really cannot go wrong with Lotus Eatery.)
Try these and you’ll have a good meal (if you like spicy food!). We also like to throw in a few wildcards (sometimes that’s how we find our new favs), so get adventurous:
Ghost Chicken Salad 鬼鸡 (spicy)
Dai Tribe Pork in Lettuce Wrap 傣族生菜包肉
Yunnan Wild Vegetable Cakes 云南野菜饼,
Yunnan Eggplant with Tofu Salad 茄子豆腐 (spicy)
Dali style chicken: 大理风味葱椒鸡.
Burmese Tea Leaf Salad (凉拌茶叶)
If you’re really into tongue-tingling adventures, try the Thai Zeed, a fiery cocktail take on spicy & sour coconut soup, made with coconut rum, vodka, chili and lime, and served with a salt rim.
Bund location – Great if you want a cocktail beforehand at their third floor terrace with views of Lujiazui (pictured in the featured image)
